New programs among dozens featured at LU Study Abroad Fair Oct. 11
The 91ÖÆƬ³§ Study Abroad Fair, October 11, will showcase dozens of opportunities for students to gain benefits of traveling and study abroad. Held under a tent on the Brooks-Shivers Dining Hall Lawn from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Fair will present all of LU's study abroad programs, including new opportunities to study in Japan, South Africa, and Quebec, Canada.
A new program “Drawing Japan,” led by Chris Troutman, assistant professor of art, will explore forms of Japanese art, including ink panting, manga, and animation, while students complete their own compositions. The group will be hosted by Beppu University in Beppu, Beaumont's sister city, and will visit Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara. The class is open to non-art majors.
Also offered is a course in Japanese Literature in Translation taught by Jennifer Ravey, instructor in the Department of English and Modern Languages, that includes a residence at Yasuda University in Hiroshima, complete with a local homestay and cultural activities. The group will then travel to Kyoto and Tokyo before returning home.
New for 2018 is LU's work with Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC) in Canada, where LU students will be able to spend a full semester on exchange on the UQAC campus taking intensive French courses at all levels. This summer, Caitlin Duerler, instructor in the Department of English and Modern Languages, will be leading a group program open to all levels of French students, to the UQAC campus. During the course, students will also get the opportunity to explore Quebec City, North America's most European (and most French speaking) major city.
Faculty members will be present at the Fair to share about many faculty-led programs available at LU. Students who have studied abroad in the past will also be in attendance to share their stories and experiences.
There are a number of scholarships, grants, and fellowships that are available for study abroad, including the Study Abroad Fee Grant, Gilman Scholarship and more. Further information about funding and opportunities will be available at the Study Abroad Fair.
LU will offer more than a dozen faculty-led programs and several semester exchange opportunities this coming year for students of all levels. The Study Abroad office is constantly working to better meet the needs of students by expanding the diversity of study abroad opportunities. Programs are available during spring break, winter break, summer terms, the May Mini sessions, and the normal fall/spring semesters.
While maintaining successful study arrangements in China, South Korea, England, France, Spain, and Ireland, the Study Abroad office has expanded their programs for professional fields like business, engineering and deaf education, and offers new locations in Latin America, Asia, and Eastern Europe.
