91ÖÆƬ³§ supports Hispanic/Latinx Heritage events

The Office of Global Diversity and Inclusive Excellence and the student-driven Latinx Movement are hosting several events during Hispanic Heritage Month.

The Office of Global Diversity and Inclusive Excellence are showcasing students who have shown academic excellence and leadership in particular during this month. These students will be featured at a Hispanic Excellence Awards Reception.

The student-led Latinx Movement, comprised of members of The Walter Prescott Webb Society, La Union Cultural de Estudiantes (LUCE) and Phi Iota Alpha, have planned events this month but also hope to change the designation of the word “Hispanic” into a more inclusive word, “Latinx.”

“The goal was to not only celebrate Latinx culture and heritage, but to also propagate Latinx as a political identity,” said Miguel Chavez, a history professor and representative of the Latinx Movement at 91ÖÆƬ³§. “We strongly feel that the term ‘Hispanic’ is old and outdated.”
