Mohammed, a biology major, has consistently exhibited a passion for learning, innovative thinking, and a strong commitment to community service. He was named a 2022 Beck Fellow, serves as a Lamar Ambassador, and volunteers with Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas and Gift of Life.

“I am thankful for the encouragement I received from my professors and Honors College faculty – particularly Dr. Thibodeaux – to apply,” Mohammed said. “The abundance of opportunities offered at 91ÖÆƬ³§ enabled me to accumulate experiences which catalyzed my personal growth and made me a competitive applicant.”

With the scholarship, Mohammed aims to pursue his goal of working in medicine.

“This scholarship will help cover my educational expenses supporting my long-term aspirations of practicing medicine. The scholarship is also a vote of confidence and I hope to repay the TSUS board’s investment in me by remaining a proactive student who is committed to the classroom, clinic and community.”

In a separate accolade, Shawn Gray, a dedicated member of the 91ÖÆƬ³§ staff, has been recognized for her exemplary contributions and unwavering commitment to the institution. Gray, who serves as the Assistant Vice President of Health, Wellness, and Accessibility, has played a pivotal role in creating an inclusive and supportive environment for students. Her innovative approach to student engagement, mentorship, and holistic development has set a high standard for excellence.

“I wanted to touch people's lives on an individual basis and help them in a way that was meaningful and addressed their crisis," Gray said. "As I've progressed through my professional career, I've been able to do that on a larger scale and the 91ÖÆƬ³§ executives have allowed me to do that in my current position.”

Gray says that recognition from TSUS is a testament to her efforts in promoting health and wellness at the university and beyond. “It is an incredible honor to be recognized for promoting 91ÖÆƬ³§ and the health and wellness of the university,” Gray said. “These are skills that students will need for the rest of their lives, and we want to promote this holistic approach at the university and beyond.”
